GREECE TO RECONSTRUCT BITOLA-GREEK BORDER RAILROAD

The Greek railway company will fully reconstruct the dilapidated railroad from Bitola to Kremenica, the key link for business transport between the two countries. The project, which costs about 6 million euros, was announced by Leonidas Moskos, director of the Greek railway company, who signed an agreement on business and technical cooperation with Fersped in Ohrid the past weekend. Mr. Moskos said that they were in talks with the Greek Government over the modernization of the 17 km long railroad from the Greek border to Bitola. Talks are being conducted with the Macedonian railway company too, and with a great many other companies whose business is contingent on the railroad. The modernization, in Mr. Moskos's opinion, will get underway in six months. "We asked for assistance from the numerous power stations in Ptolemaida interested in transporting lignite and other energy resources needed for their operations via this railroad, which is a link to the whole Balkans. They may also be included in the project for modernization of the railroad to Bitola," Mr. Moskos said. According to the director of the Greek railway company, the Greek portion of the railroad has been fully renovated, and so if the rest of the railway is reconstructed too, the railroad will be fully modernized and this will mean a lot to the business cooperation between the two countries, which, as it is, is on a very high level. Apart from the investment in renovating the railway to Bitola, Mr. Moskos said new cars, needed to fully cover the extensive scope of work with Fersped, would also be procured as soon as possible.
