Ljubljana, 27 November (STA) - Economy Minister Andrej Vizjak called for speedy integration of the Balkans into the EU and a quick resolution of the future status of Kosovo as he opened an international panel themed "Balkans in the Balance" in Ljubljana on Tuesday. Markets in the region are vital for Slovenia, one of the biggest investors there. The event is focusing on micro- and macroeconomic challenges of the region, in particular investment risks and aspirations to a balanced economic development of the entire Balkans. According to Vizjak, such development depends on regional stability, democracy, competition, transparency and in particular progress towards the EU and its standards.
Kosovo is a European issue and requires an integrated European solution, Vizjak said and voiced the hope that the solution would boost Slovenia's business ties with Kosovo and Serbia.
While Slovenian foreign direct investments in Kosovo are among the highest this year, Serbia is one of the biggest partners of the Slovenian private sector, the minister noted.
Vizjak also highlighted the potential of Bosnia-Herzegovina in the exports of raw materials, in particular wood, and electricity, both of which Slovenian companies would like to invest in.
Slovenian investors are also attracted to Macedonia, especially its tourism, Vizjak said and praised the country for its strong and effective self-promotion campaign.
On the down side, the minister pointed to corruption and organised crime, which he said was still powerful in the Balkans. "This must be tackled seriously and urgently," he said.
The minister also highlighted the need for free movement of goods, services and labour. "Competition requires regional cooperation and market integration; in particular in coordinating agreements on free movement of goods, services and labour, which will facilitate development among the regions."
